I bought Shiki this year when Funimation released it. I also wrote up a special piece on it on how it combined the best aspects of vampire movies and zombie movies. It sold less than expected. I suck.

I really enjoyed the series, its colorful designs, and its horrible bleakness near the end. A lot of people I respect found it too boring, or too derivative. Pleasing everybody is hard.

But the Season 1 OP by Buck Tick is wonderful. It’s a great vampire rock ballad about forbidden love playing while villagers dissolve into neon skeletons. Fabulous vampires dance about and everyone’s drawn in stained-glass window style to a drumbeat.

I re-watch the opening every few weeks. It’s one of the greats, even as opinions on the show differ.
